The Daedalus has three key resources that must be maintained at appropriate levels for the mission to succeed:
Oxygen,
Fuel and
Armor.
Oxygen
The most difficult resource to maintain an appropriate level of is
Oxygen. At the end of each cycle the ship's
amount is reduced by one, with an additional loss of one each cycle for each broken oxygen tank, if any. Oxygen loss is not affected by the number of crew or by fires.
When the oxygen level reaches
0, a random crew member will die every cycle. If a character is holding an oxygen capsule he will be saved from asphyxiation but the capsule will be used up.
TODO: Chance that characters don't die?
Plants
Oxygen can be obtained from plants. Each healthy adult plant produces 1
each day at the day change (cycle 8 to cycle 1). Plants cannot fully replenish spent oxygen with the starting 5 plants and hydropots, but in the long run, given needed care and the necessary NERON Projects (Extra Hydropots for 3 more Hydropots) can normally cover the ship's oxygen needs and then some (2 more Hydropots with
Ian's
Green Thumb skill).
Explorations
A faster, but also more dangerous way to obtain
are
planetary explorations. If the analysis of a planet indicates the presence of oxygen, the expedition can gain from 0 to 24
units depending on chance.
Fuel
Fuel is necessary to move the Daedalus. The maximum fuel level is 32 units, which should be sufficient for an average game. A broken fuel tank does not leak fuel, it only becomes inaccessible for manual fuel operation (extracting and inserting). However, eventually an Expedition may be necessary to replenish fuel, as certain planet zones (Hydrocarbon, Mountain, Caverns and Shipwreck) are the only source of new
in the game.
Armor
The
Armor of the ship represents the consistency of its construction. At the beginning of the game, the Daedalus has the maximum amount, 100
. If
drops to 0, the ship breaks apart and the entire crew is killed, instantly ending the game. Armor is damaged by attacking
hunters and asteroids, which is counted at every cycle change.
The frequency of hunters and asteroids makes it necessary to repair the ship. Anyone can attempt repairs with Scrap Metal, restoring 5
and consuming one Scrap Metal if successful. The base chance of repair success is 25%. It is not influenced by the
Technician skill, but it is raised to 37% with the Wrench item. The Oscilloscope raises the
restored by a repairing action to 10, and wielding both the Wrench and the Oscilloscope raises the success rate to 75%.
