Mush and Water

The Mush can be hurt by water, but why? It's only water.

It can be interesting to consider some of the things outside of the game that may have influenced the developer during the games original concept (consciously or not).

The game mush is one of many games from Motion-Twin, another Motion-Twin game is Die2Nite which some may say is the precursor to mush. In Die2Nite the human players are fighting to survive against a growing zombie horde. The zombies in this game are also hurt by water, like the mush.

One thing these two games have in common is that "the bad guys" are hurt by water.

There are older works of fiction with a similar idea.

The Lord of the Rings, (1954) the Nazgûl are first defeated crossing the River Bruinen.

The Wizard of Oz (1939), Dorothy defeats the Wicked Witch with a bucket of water.

If we focus on the undead in pop culture we continually see holy water appearing as a viable weapon.

Van Helsing (2004, movie)

Heros Quest (1989, board game)

...and countless others.

Of course the mush aliens are not undead, however they are in ways like the undead and not just because of the vulnerability to water.

With the arrival of Resident Evil (1996) and other works it has now become common in pop culture to refer to "the zombie infection" where we would have otherwise considered a zombie apocalypse to be the result of voodoo magic or some other unnatural effect.

The use of the word infection along with the spreading of the infection, converting humans to zombies/mush, is another parallel. Looking at the mush history page we can even see the words "...nothing but a mindless zombie".

So Natamy Rifle must be a water gun or something? --Dorn (talk) 05:42, 23 June 2014 (MDT)
