For me, the crewmate for project with diplomat gave a gold project. 
After choosing that option, the trader left.


: I think the trader will always leave after a trade is completed. I don't think I've ever seen a gold project offered before, though.  AFAICT on my ships this has always yielded a single standard NERON project.
